I disagree. I think the intention was always that John would get the team.


He didn't figure on the value of the team and stadium being as high as it was by the time he died. He always figured his son would easily buy the franchise from his trust. Bequeathing it would have certainly cost a bunch in gift taxes. But if he'd sold and gifted chunks of it over several years, he could have saved a bunch.

If John had already owned 40+ percent before Redskins Stadium (now FedEx Field) had broken ground, the transition would have been pretty simple. Of the franchise's $1.2 billion (or whatever it was) value, something like $800 million was the stadium, if I'm remembering correctly.
