FWIW Dara's 2 older sisters, Michaela and Marina, both played for the Irish

and Michaela is currently an assistant coach with the Irish.

"Dara joins sister Michaela, a current assistant coach and program alum, and will become the third Mabrey to play for the Irish. Sister Marina cemented her place in Irish history after helping lead Notre Dame to a 2018 national championship and becoming the program’s all-time three-point leader. She currently plays for the Dallas Wings."

You may be right about the possibility that players could use VT as a stepping stone to play for a better program. However, this may be a unique case given the familial ties with Notre Dame.
