One of my brothers texted the fam today and said he just got a new AC unit.

The one he replaced was THIRTY-EIGHT years old. Wowzers.

It was undersized the whole time (he knew this). He has an 1,800 sq ft house, and the unit was sized for a 1,200 sq ft house. Same thing happened to us when our house was built in 1998. The builder installed two units, a 1.5-ton unit and a 2-ton unit. When the units died 12 years later, the company that replaced them said "You need 2-ton and 2.5-ton units." So we had them put in and have been very happy ever since. (I, too, could tell our units were undersized.)

Apparently, this happens a lot. (Builders undersizing ACs)
