I've experienced that too, more than once
My credit union just cancels the card, cancels the fraudulent charge, and mails out a new card.
The worst thing I was ever stuck with was a monthly recurring charge for just over $1 that I had overlooked since this was my primary credit card that I used for the majority of my purchases. I called the number associated with the charge, and they said I must have signed up for online promotions with them. They refunded that month, and the previous one, but kept the rest. I think I was out about $10, so I put that down for a lesson learned. I'm sure if they had hit 100K cards, they were making $100K/month.
I look at every charge these days.
