Go back and look at when the "masks aren't necessary" statements were made


Many of them were early/mid March which was before we'd started seeing widespread community spread in this country. When Dr. Fauci said "Right now in the United States, people should not be walking around with masks." it was March 8th. At that point in time the number of confirmed cases in the US was 423. It was only over the next several weeks that the case count started to jump dramatically. By early April the recommendation was to wear masks because the virus had become so prevalent.
