At work on King St in Old Town

In my office, saw the story about the "accident". Went downstairs and a bunch of people were in the conference room watching the coverage on TV.

Saw the second plane hit....same reaction. That wasn't an accident.

Not long after a young woman came into the office and was in tears and shaking. She had been on 110 and just passed the Pentagon and saw the fireball in her rear-view mirror. Those that remember how 110 used to run right next to the pentagon (with the day care center fight up against the road on the other side), can imagine how terrifying that would be.

My wife was with our daughter at her speech therapist at a church right next to the CIA complex in 123. Stories were flying about explosions at CIA, at the mall, at the White House....and of course cell service was useless so I couldn't get ahold of her.

On the other side of the world, my BIL was on a plane that had just left Germany....he said he felt the plane turn around but nothing was said. They landed and were told that there had been an emergency and US airspace had been closed. Only found out what had happened when he saw it on TV in the terminal. Of course we had no idea where he was or the status of his flight because the internet and airline sites was more or less useless.

The happy side....my sister was at Arlington Hospital for an OB appointment....she came to our house after (had moved down to the sticks outside Charlottesville) and stayed with us until my nephew was born on the 13th.

Biggest thing I remember about that day was the quiet outside....no planes in the sky which was surprisingly noticeable. Until the fighters came over, and you could see the weapons loads. Then came the almost nonstop flights of helo's, in sets of 3, on their way to Mt Weather and/or the other EAC's.
