What are some novice mistakes that often happen when gun owners clean their guns for the first time?

The number one egregious mistake most novice gunowners will commit when they clean their gun for the first time would be…
Pouring oil
… the liberal application of gun oil on their firearm. Often these shooters will apply the more is better technique by dousing their handgun with any lubricant they have on hand including high viscosity motor oil, or even cooking oil.

The first indication that something is awry is when a plume of black smoke billows out of the stall as the initial string of rounds burn off the oily residue in the bore. As they turn around from the bench, unbeknownst to the novice, their face and shirt is peppered with a black mixture of oily carbon.

As the now befreckled shooter works through their can of ammo, their handgun begins to behave a bit erratically. They'll experience an occasional jam, and possible light primer strikes resulting in the failure to fire.

The applied oil that should have prevented such problems from occurring has instead created a patina of carbon fouling in the chamber, and has infiltrated the firing pin channel forming a carbon slurry which impedes the movement of the firing pin.

Usually an application of a spray degreaser such as Gun Scrubber may clear up any issues, but in severe cases a detailed cleaning of the gun may be required. Normally a less is more approach is favorable when lubricating a firearm. Only a thin film of oil on the frame rails is required to prevent binding of the slide to frame.

This seems to be a common initiation into gun maintenance for many novice gunowners as it was for me dual-wielding twin cans of WD-40 many decades ago with my very first handgun.
