Softball scrimmage update

The Hokies played another intersquad doubleheader this weekend and the balls were once again flying all over Tech Softball Park. The first game ended 4-2, but was followed by a crazy 18-7 slugfest in the second game. There's a long way to go before the season starts, but I think this team is going to be fun to watch and will keep the scoreboard operators busy.

There were lots and lots of positives on the offensive side of the ledger, so I'll try to hit the highlights.

First, the Newcomers:

*Cameron Fagan batted leadoff for the maroon team and was 6 for 9, scored 5 runs and showed some nice wheels

*Addy Greene was 3 for 8 and had a nice 2 run homer to center field.

*Emma Ritter registered a couple of base hits and stole two bases.

*Emma Yates went 3 for 5.

*Sophomore transfer Morgan Overaitis led off game 1 with a monster blast off the scoreboard.

Not to be outdone, the veterans were in mid-season form:

*Jayme Bailey was 4 for 4 in game 2 with two “no doubt” home runs – a 2 run shot followed by a 3 run blast.

*Maddie Rountree went 5 for 6

*Darby Trull was 4 for 5 and scored 4 runs.

*Meredith Slaw hit a monster home run to center field and got on base in all six of her at bats.

*Kayleigh Addington caught both games and hit a solo bomb in game two.

I suppose if one insists on worrying, you can do so about the pitching, but I’m not. These batters have seen our pitchers day after day after day in practice - an advantage our opponents will not have.

Friday night, Keely was Keely, and both Ivy Rosenberry and Mackenzie Obsorne looked solid. The fourth pitcher, who caught the brunt of the hitting explosion, was freshman Maija Louko, who had pitched in high school, but is listed as a utility player on the Hokies roster. She had played third base in the last scrimmage and registered a couple of base hits.

Overall, another beautiful night at Tech softball park and it was great seeing the ladies in action.
