I remember reading about how initially there was concern re: Diet Coke

The Coca-Cola Company was concerned when they came out with Diet Coke that they'd just cannibalize sales of Tab and not grow the brand any. The differentiation they made, at least at first, was that Tab was a zero-calorie beverage to help you lose weight, while Diet Coke was a great-tasting soda that just happened to have one calorie.
