I think generally, you get what you get...
every few years, the shot ends up being poorly matched to that year's dominant strains that are circulating. In those cases, generally nothing is done.
I do seem to recall several years ago, a relatively unusual strain of the swine flu reared is piggly head, and I think at that time they ramped up production of a new quadrivalent vaccine that included this new strain.
