We live in a somewhat rural county (pop 100,000) with one medium sized city (50,000). So in our county you've more or less got either farm or city environments -- neither conducive to standard safe trick or treating, which happens best in plasticland generic suburbs of medium density with lots of sidewalks and lots of houses.

The neighborhood we live was built in 1990 in a farmer's field right down behind the little (200 y.o.) town we live in (pop 2,000). There are 500 houses there -- a little chunk of 1990s suburb complete with sidewalks plunked into the middle of a very different environment.

It's really the only spot in the county like that. Therefore, the WHOLE COUNTY drives to our neighborhood to trick-or-treat from 6pm to 8pm on 10/31. 600 kids at your doorstep is not unusual. Short lines form at each front porch. You sit out there for two hours and drop off a piece of candy every 10-15 seconds, more or less.

Now, our county is also a pretty low-density place for COVID, so the town government decided to let 10/31 go on as scheduled, at your discretion. I predicted about 50% of turnout, got a little bit more than that. So I only had to spend $50 on candy this year rather than $80.
