My Insight
If you listen to the video she had on YouTube Muffet did recruit her when she was transferring out of VT and it wasn't just ND she was considering.
Jordan Nixon was recruited over her at Notre Dame and then she left which opened that position up. The Stanford grad transfer took over that spot last year, she graduated and that spot is wide open until next year now. Perfect opportunity for Mabrey.
Ivey has known her since she was 8 years from recruiting her two sisters. So when that change happened I believe she knew for sure she was going to ND at that point. She probably would have ended up there if Muffet stayed too.
If she was offered to go to Notre Dame out of High School and would have had decent playing time she would have gone there. I think at the time she thought that was not the best option. Sometimes things change.
The waiver has nothing to do with her sister being on the team. She even said on that video that she thought it wouldn't be approved. But then almost every player now is being approved because of COVID, some schools just are not pushing the issue as much to get their players cleared. ND pushed really hard in that aspect and Ivey basically mentioned that. I don't think she would have been cleared if it wasn't for COVID but who knows. I think VT just has not pushed as hard and stayed on the toes of the NCAA and ACC to clear Baines. That is just my opinion, even though it may not be popular. This has nothing to do with Brooks by the way, there are people that literally handle the transfer situations and you have to rely on them to get it done right.
Obviously our focus at VT has been on the football program for a long time and basketball on both sides often gets forgotten. Even as bad as the football team has been in the last couple of years. Nobody wanted to support the men's team until they were good enough to get to the Sweet 16. Really made me mad when people would start showing up to games like they have been there through the thick and thin. You are suppose to support your team through the bad and good times.
Yes the football team makes the majority of the money, but sometimes when all the attention is paid to one sport others get neglected and under Weaver it was really bad. Whit has done a much better job at trying to even that out the best he can.
I am going to call people out on this, but why can't we even get the next game feature on this message board for the women's team for instance. I am sure that wouldn't take long to accomplish and wouldn't cost any money to do. The women's team hardly gets mentioned on any podcast or anything anywhere except for the Brooks show and that is a problem. Even that is poorly done. Why can't we even get a decent video of the shows like most other schools do.
Another example is how the men's team basically got ignored this year until they beat Villanova, then got ignored again after losing to Penn State. We need fan support and podcasts and coverage for basketball on both sides just like football. Yeah there are some but it is like they are being forced to talk about basketball.
We are never going to be able to keep good players on a consistent basis if the support simply isn't there except for a dedicated fan base. Yes we will get players that don't care, but a lot of college kids nowadays do and that is a problem for us. Why stay at a school if you can transfer and it betters your opportunities of getting noticed and playing pro, especially on the women's side. Schools like Notre Dame have alumni that come back like our football team does for the current players and it helps build up the new team and players even when times are rough. I honestly don't see that hardly at all with our women's team. Most players graduate and move on and you never hear of them again. Exceptions are Cole, Panousis, Gibson, Wetzel, and Witherspoon. Even out of those really all your hear from now are Cole and Panousis. That in my opinion needs to change culture wise, which I think Brooks is starting. But when the outside support is hardly there it is hard for those players to come back and be motivated to be part of the next generation as sad as that is.
Sorry for an extremely long post but just releasing some of the frustrations I have had for a while. Don't get me wrong I love our team, I just wish we got more support from the inside and out! They deserve it!
