As a golf letterman myself, that is the right coaching attitude

Coach at my high school for a long time was a locally well known distance runner (participated in a lot of big races including the Boston Marathon). During matches, after he made sure that things were squared away and all groups were off the tee, he would go out and run the course and/or surrounding area.

His approach also carried over to transport to the matches. Players were allowed to drive themselves as long as they made it on time. Underclassmen would catch rides with guys who had their driver's licenses. Not saying that any mischief ever occurred within that situation -- also not saying it didn't.

Our team won the district championship tournament one year. But coach didn't find out until after the trophy ceremony -- he was out running and didn't get back until guys were pulling out of the parking lot.

A few years later he coached the football team for a year. They were actually pretty successful -- lost a playoff game against Blacksburg that they were heavily favored to win. But some kid named Shane Beamer apparently had a career day.
