I had a similar situation


Not quite as closely timed, though ... but about three months after I paid off my car, I skidded on a patch of ice on a curvy road and ended up hitting an SUV head on. Even though it was only about 10-15 mph, my car was still totaled. And yeah, not a dime of damage to the other guy.

It actually ended up working out pretty well for me, though. I got the same exact car, brand-new, and with the insurance money plus a bit of down payment, I was able to get a car that was five years newer for just two more years of the same payment. And because it was five years newer, it had five year's worth of advances, such as side air bags, CD instead of tape deck, antilock brakes, sun roof, etc.

I drove that car for another 13 years before it got t-boned to death by a 20-something more interested in her phone than the red light. But that's another story.
