But I'd love for that to be a secondary goal of this increase -- to eliminate the tipping system. Your pay shouldn't be dependent on if your customers are having a good day or whether they're cheap or generous. And if you're a good enough waitress that you get more tips usually? Well, then it's up to management to notice that and give you a raise over your colleague so you'll get higher pay.

Fast food is tricky. One of the goals, from what I understand, of raising the minimum wage is to make it so many of the immigrant fast-food workers don't have to work two jobs to make ends meet -- do eight hours at McDonald's and then go do eight hours at Popeye's across the street. So the reduction in jobs due to whatever means in fast food may be exactly what's necessary to keep the workforce at the right level for the jobs available. I dunno though.
