I think Civil -- just because there was no escaping the impact of it


Particularly for those who are/were of Southern extraction.

In my direct line my 3rd great grandfather served as a Confederate cavalryman. Enlisted in 1862 along with his then 14 year old son. Was captured in the autumn of 1864 during Sheridan's Valley campaign and was interred at Point Lookout until a few months after the war ended. Somewhere along the way his son disappeared (presumed KIA). And when he made his way back home he discovered that my 3rd great grandmother had assumed he was dead and had "remarried" (he ultimately stepped aside and granted her a divorce to resolve the bigamy issue).

All things considered, he was probably one of the lucky ones.
