In a major ice storm in 1990/91, a friends backyard had a pine tree lose


branches on 1 side. Ice all over it. A branch hear the top broke, fell on the one below making it too heavy to support the weight, so it breaks. Repeat the process for the next 35 to 40 feet or so and you end up with a one sided pine.
