You really can't stop renting the gateway (that is the modem)


That is not entirely true, you can buy a modem for some services and program it, but for most people that is not realistic. But, you have to have a modem because it translate the raw signal in the cable to turn it into internet service. The service has to recognize it and be able to communicate with it, thus why using the rented one is almost always a better option.

If you want to buy a router, then you just plug the router into the modem with an ethernet cable and you're done.

The advantage today of using the providers router is usually the simplified security management (through your service web account) rather than the routers interface. For those that don't do it for a living or spend a lot of time, the simplification can be worth the cost.
