I did not consider that the trash was burned and put on gardens. That would definitely increase the risk.

I grew up in a very rural area and not that long ago. We burned our trash and dumped it in a ditch. Never would have considered putting it in the garden. It was always fun to go to the dump, except for that time I stepped on a nail.
