Charging is getting better

Tesla can get you to a 200 mile charge in 15 minutes with a supercharging station.

Granted, I think the closest charging station to my house is 25 miles away, and there are only two within a hundred miles. Compare that to the five gas stations within 2 miles.

Charging time is a problem that is darned close to being solved. But we need hundreds of thousands more charging stations (not to mention grid capacity) for electric cars to work as anything but a niche market.

A good first step would be to regulate the plug-in interface. Currently, each electric car manufacturer has their own plug...so you can't plug a Nissan Leaf in at a Tesla station. Need an industry wide agreement (or federal regulation to force the issue) of a single plug, voltage, and current for fast charging.

Beyond that, some organization(s) with a nationwide footprint will need to throw their hat into the charging station game. There is no way Tesla or even GM could build all the charging stations we need. Ideally, it would help if every Exxon, Shell, BP, Sheetz, WaWa, etc. offered charging stations. Failing that, maybe Starbucks, Subway, or Dollar General could do it since they have a network of locations such that you can't drive 5 miles without encountering their next store.
