walks and pitchers that can't throw strikes along with missed outs on routine balls do much more damage than just the runs they give up. Baseball is such a mental game and players have so much time to think and overthink. When they don't believe the pitchers and defense can shut down the other team, they press and start trying to hit 5 run homers with no-one on base.
