When Schnellenberger was putting together the FAU program
he spoke just about anywhere in the area that a crowd could be found. He spoke at our Rotary lunch and his baritone voice got everyone's attention and you knew you were hearing a legend talking. Our Palm Beach County high school football organization provided the auxiliary sideline crew and I volunteered for 6 of the 7 home games that were played at Joe Robbie stadium the initial year...including the first game ever against Slippery Rock (The Rock). I did the auxiliary down marker on the home team side (the official down marker was on the visiting team sideline). I never moved until the next snap was eminent (in the event the officials needed the prior down location for game administration) and my biggest concern was making sure I didn't smack Howard with the marker as I moved along the sideline! A few of the players on the team knew me from my son's playing days in high school and would approach me and say "Mr Mansfield...aren't you supposed to be up here?" to which I would respond "I am kinda slow" and wink.
I loved hearing Howard's voice...
RIP Howard Schnellenberger...
