I get them in the winter when my hands dry out horribly.


Oddly, it seems to happen to me less often when I keep my fingernails trimmed fairly short. If they get too long, I get those splits along the sides of the nails, at the edges of the quick. It aches so badly when that happens, because every time I pick up something, the wound is pulled open by the pressure on the pad of the affected finger. It seems like it takes forever to heal.
