Also known as peccary, had a run in with one once...

Javelina's have fairly substantial tusks and are a robust little critter. They have a layer of gristle around their neck and shoulders which make them very tough, especially in close (this is important in a minute).

Hunting quail in Casa Grande (near the Frito Lay plant, right where the SRP peaking plant is in case you ask MK), came across a board, sow and her piglets. Boar was not real happy with me and was bluff charging and stamping the ground at me while the sow took off with the brood. I put a round of #7's over top of him (shooting him would have just pissed him off and they were not in season) and he got the message he should be on his way and took off.

Made my way over to a field near the patch I was hunting and stepped out in the field. The boar hopped out of the thicket about 100 yards down from me, ran across the field, and started to flank an irrigation ditch on the other side of the field. All of a sudden, the javelina rolls out in the field like he's been hit by a truck and a scrum of fur and legs proceeds to tangle in the field. A few seconds after the commotion, the mass separates into a javelina and a rather large coyote who had ambushed the javelina from the ditch! The two of them proceed to fight and chase each other back and fourth across the field for several minutes. It was a fairly even fight the whole time, neither really getting the better of the other.

Finally the javelina trots off and the coyote reckons that discretion is the better part of valor and goes the other way.

One of the neatest spectacles I've personally witnessed in nature.
