Quick Longwood Preview
The Longwood Lancers come to Blacksburg Wednesday to take on the #15/#13 Virginia Tech Hokies (23-6 overall, 16-6 ACC) in a doubleheader which is scheduled to start at 4:00. The games are scheduled to be shown on ACCNX and approximately 150 fans will be admitted on a first come-first serve basis.
Longwood stands at 15-16 on the year and is coming off a 3 game sweep at home to Campbell in which they lost by a combined score of 18-1. Prior to that series, the Lancers had won 11 games in a row and actually beat #15 Georgia 3-2 earlier in the year.
Longwood is coached by Dr. Megan Brown, who replaced legendary Lancer Coach Kathy Riley in August, 2020. Brown was a 3-time All American pitcher at Florida Southern, where she won 124 games and had a career ERA of 0.69.
On paper, these games look like a potential mismatch, but anything can happen – just ask Georgia.
Longwood has a team batting average of .233 and is averaging 3.8 runs per game. They do not have a hitter batting over .300 for the season. However, the Lancers do like to run – they have 70 stolen bases on the year, led by Mason Basdikis, who is a perfect 20-20 on thefts this season.
The Hokies, meanwhile, still lead the ACC in hitting with a .311 team average and are averaging 5.7 runs per game. They have 7 players hitting above .300, although Cameron Fagan may not see action.
In the circle, Longwood has a team ERA of 5.53 and are averaging 4.6 strikeouts per 7 innings. The Hokies pitching numbers are skewed because of All-American Keely Rochard, but the team ERA is still 1.64. I expect Coach Pete D’Amour to give freshmen hurlers Mackenzie Osborne and Ivy Rosenberry the ball Wednesday to give them some much needed experience.
It is supposed to be an absolutely beautiful day in Blacksburg Wednesday with an afternoon high in the mid 70s. Come on out and see the Hokies and the Lancers do battle.
Here are the Tale of the Tape and Individual Stats.
Let’s Go Hokies!
