During the Oklahoma-Georgia game last night, the announcers said that the NCAA has decided to announce 20 potential regional sites next week and then finalize the final 16 on selection Sunday.

I have not seen that in writing, but it would certainly seem to make more sense and keeps the NCAA from looking too silly if they had stuck with just 16 sites as had been originally announced.

This way they have some flexibility if a team tanks the last two weeks.
