As stupid as it may seem, the infield fly rule is very necessary
Let's say you have men on first and second and someone hits a pop fly to the short stop. Runners stay close to their bags. Without the infield fly rule, the short stop can intentionally miss it, then throw to third then second for 2 outs. Smart infielders will do this on soft line drives hit their way. Intentionally not catch it and knock it down. The runners freeze and you have an easy double play.
On the infamous infield fly against the Braves, I still say that it was the correct call "by rule" since it was within the infielder's range. However, that part of the rule needs clarification. I think CCs hat is still in orbit somewhere he threw it so hard.....
