Had a roomate at VT back in 1992-94 timeframe who was majoring in Materials
who worked with Bell helmets & developed a helmet smasher for a class project. It was a very basic machine that he developed for the class where he measured with sledge hammers rotating on a board to measure the absorption. I still believe to this day that it was his idea (from crashing pretty hard on a Mountain Bike...including a hole in his helmet.) that pushed a VT prof in this direction.
