I remember cleaning my M1 Garand during AOCS

For inspection, they needed to be clean and dry every week, but when I was in line to return it to the armory for the last time, I left it nice and wet, because I had no idea how long it would be in there before being issued.

Well the worst fear imaginable happened...the Master Gunnery Sargent decided to step in to inspect our rifles while we were in line, and started with the guy in front of me. Almost crapped my pants, because we had heard horror stories about guys who were turning in dirty rifles, and didn't want that to happen to us on the last day before we were candidate officers. He took one look at mine and handed it back, then moved to the next guy. I would have explained why it was wet, but he didn't ask. Whew!
