Seen a guy taste a plating bath to see if it had enough cyanide in it

No joke. Vendor we used for plating certain parts, dipped his finger in a plating bath and said there was not enough and had the operator drop a couple more "eggs" in the bath. I think he'd been in the business so long he had been pickled.
