Because that player can go play defense and not lose a position player


Say you have a light hitting 1st or 2nd basemen, the DP can hit for them and allow your pitcher to hit. Not just a DH, they can play.

Some teams will use the DP to have 2 pitchers in a lineup. Coach can flip between pitchers and never burn either one.

Terrible explanation, but also to be different from baseball I’m sure. They can be a fielder and not just a hitter, hence “player”
