New wifi wireless vs ethernet bandwidth issue

Comcast recently upgraded my gateway/wifi combo box. I have no idea of the max performance specs for it. I have a laptop connected by wifi and a desktop connected by ethernet.

I ran a speed test on both after installing the new gateway. The laptop gets a whopping 290 mbps download speed (upload speeds with Comcast are crap regardless). The desktop is old, operating with a mobo-connected 100 mbps ethernet port so I bought a 1000 mbps ethernet card, installed new drivers, and upgraded the cable to cat 5.5. After rebooting the gateway my desktop speed test clocked in at a mere 78 mbps.

What else could be throttling the bandwidth of the ethernet connection?
