Oh it's all very sensational. Absolutely.

But violent crime stats, in the aggregate, have been generally down for going on 20 year now.

People like watching the crazy. It gets ratings and it gets clicks. And more than ever before it's getting caught on camera. When one network shows the latest crazy that happened on the other side of the country, and the other network shows the local zoning board meeting that's more impactful to their actual lives, which do you suppose most people are going to watch?

And since the crazy is always on, people can't help but feel like it's everywhere and society is crumbling. Go figure.
