I agree with this, but it's actually not a simple concept...

...for an awful lot of people to grasp. And because of that difficulty, they don't (and can't possibly) perceive it as selfish to not get vaccinated.

A lot of people think in binary terms. Something either succeeds or fails. The light is on or it's off. But epidemiology doesn't work like that. Public health measures don't work like that. Everything can best be thought of as an intervention that offers a range of added protection. Whether it's masking, social distancing, capacity restrictions, closures, or vaccines. None of those things are absolutely worthless and none of those things offer perfect protection. The best we can ever do is to employ as many of those things as are realistic at a given time *and* have as much cooperative participation from people as is possible.

So it's not just a matter of, well, we vaccinated folks care because we don't variants to form that may render our vaccines less effective. Yes, that's an issue. But there's an even more straightforward one. Our vaccines are very, very good, but not perfect. The more people that get vaccinated, the less likely it becomes that any specific vaccinated person will get it (even as breakthrough cases in total increase, due to the increase in vaccinated people). We all have an immediate interest in having as many people who can realistically get the vaccine do so.

That said...there's no point in hectoring people any more. Outreach to certain communities will continue to be useful, but most people who haven't gotten it are just not going to get it. It's definitely not optimal, but we have no choice other than to work around those folks. It just is what it is at this point.
