VT also has a relatively short athletics history

We were a regional military school akin to VMI until the 70s. It wasn't until the mid 90s that any sport other than basketball even showed up on the national radar.

We're honestly closest to a team title in Softball, Soccer, and Basketball as we've been within striking distance in all of those the last decade. It's much more likely we win in a single elimination bracket than in something like Football or Wrestling where it requires top performances across a number of different matches.
