But what if I want to be a professional football player and I also want

a college degree? Why should I go do "something else" until I'm eligible for the draft? Scholarships are a financial reward used to incentivize attendance to a school -- the desire to have the student-athlete is because of their athletic talent. Seems to me that it doesn't help the university achieve its mission of athletic excellence to tell players they can't earn money from their talent while using that talent to serve the university.

The university isn't placing any caps or limits on their TV deals with networks or on the donations they'll accept from donors or marketing dollars from sponsors. Why should the players be the only ones who have a cap on how much they can make? Seems wholly exploitative to institute arbitrary caps on what players can earn from their talent while being gleefully unrestrained with regard to how much the university and coaches can gain from the talent of those same players.

It's their talent. It's their labor. If you want to limit how much anyone and everyone involved in sports can earn from a player's labor -- well, at least that would be a principled (but still wrong) position. But to say that all the other people invested in the system can make millions. The institution can benefit endlessly -- but the players can only benefit to a certain point OFF THEIR OWN TALENT is the definition of injustice.
