The problem is that just about everything made in the 80s...

...is more reliable than new appliances. As far as I'm concerned, everything produced today will fail within 5 years. We had an 80s Whirlpool fridge that was still working when we remodeled our kitchen 3 years ago. We sold it and I bet it still works today. Meanwhile our 3 year old GE dishwasher is already dead. We also have a Kenmore washer and electric dryer from the 90s (I'm guessing), and though each has broken down a couple of times in the 16 years we've lived in our house, I've been able to repair them myself each time for ~$20 or less. I will keep band-aiding them until the parts are no longer available. At this point, there's no way I'm buying a new appliance when the one it's replacing is still perfectly functional.
