How about keeping the 12 team playoff, but limiting conferences to 2 teams?

Or we could make it a 8 team playoff eliminating the byes.

Limit conferences to a max of 2 teams.

Last but not least, anytime a conference places two teams in the playoff, they are required to play each other in the first round. Frankly no one wants to see a playoff that's dominated by any single conference.
