A few years ago on vacation I stupidly rode my bike during....

...the hottest part of the hottest day of the week and nearly killed myself. I do the same ride every year - ride 8 miles down the beach to where it ends at a rock jetty, and then turn around and ride back. Granted, I'm getting older, but it's usually no big deal. But 3 years ago, I didn't pay any attention to the fact that the heat index was over 100, and I also didn't properly nourish myself or hydrate enough, either. I ran out of water about halfway through and was about to keel over during the last couple of miles. I'm pretty sure my blood sugar tanked and I was also badly dehydrated. I ended up having to stay in bed the rest of the day to recouperate. I won't make that mistake again.

I did the same ride yesterday, but I went out at about 7:00 AM in the cool of the morning and made sure I had plenty of water. Although I'm not as fast as when I was in my 20s, I knocked it out without any trouble.
