Seems to me that they learned how to roll up the sidewall & stick there.

My last car had it happen twice. They were run flats, but luckily I had a road hazard coverage. I even got a dang bolt shot from a front tire to a back tire that hit just enough on the edge where the tire had to be replaced...I finally figured out what that tick tick tick (and gets faster as you speed up) sound was.
