begins with the unsaid assumption "if everything continues as it is today..." Which is never actually true.

We were told in the 70's that the planet would run out of oil by the mid 90's. Sure, we probably did run out of the oil we knew about and could get to easily, but there is money to be made in finding oil, so find more we did.

If there is money to be made in batteries, then you can absolutely guarantee mankind will either (a) find more reserves of lithium that are unknown today, (b) invent ways to get to lithium that we know about, but can't gracefully extract, or (c) invent an alternative that doesn't use lithium. Smart and greedy people don't just sit around and wait for things to collapse, they find alternatives. Sure, the dumb ones get all the publicity, but there are a lot of smart and greedy people in this world who keep it going.
