Column four is the result of a myriad of factors.


There are many different paths that can lead to success. However, when you are not overwhelmingly more talented than your opposition, being disciplined and not giving "free" yardage or killing your own drives with offensive penalties sure helps. You won't find a strong bivariate correlation between penalties and wins because there are so many alternative paths to wins. Alabama, for example, is 116th in the nation in penalties per game. But they are just BETTER than their competition -- so it is irrelevant. However, might it matter when they face UGA in the SECCG? Maybe. UGA is 56th in penalties per game. If the margin is razor thin between those two teams, maybe an untimely penalty or two will be the difference.
