That's the dilemma
VT was fortunate to have a coach from 1987 thru 2015 who was a VT alumni AND ran a successful program... life was good. VT didnt have to really worry and deal with the escalating and changing hiring practices that evolved from 1987 to 2015. We were in the bubble. Also, we were in a relationship bubble with recruiting, since Frank dealt with relationships within the state to get players to come.. some not. However, with that VT was in a bubble while recruiting changed drastically. VT investment in football flatlined. So they didnt do what the others did, because all felt its VT we dont need too. (i also remember in 2014, a football coach, saying I got to figure out this thing called email. AGHHH. Also, overall college football has evolved over the years in all matters. ALot of Hokie nation, just screaming, can't we just go back to the days, and leave us alone.
The key is change, and when you make and what it evolves. Its divisive and polarizing. Some camps want immediate change others keep saying we just have to move on and move on. The key to VT is NO Decision and punting because of risk......And its worse now with the instability of college football and the future bump in investments that need to be infused immediately... Also, constant communication, (not marketing about the game environment, but solid emotional buy-in by the athletic dept. Just appears they are running a business not a 'special place'
However, with constant churn about the coaching staff, dis-satisfaction, and constant grind in all camps, folks will lose interest in the program and ultimately THAT will be the ultimate death to the program in a special place.
I hope our university/Board of Visitors leaders understand and are discussing the malaise and working scenerios to reinvigorate the program and continue to make VT a special diverse state wide university for academic, research, and academic excellence
