Life after Fu

Uber Hokie posted a very thoughtful post over the weekend that was overwhelmingly well received by the board. Uber - super job, classy.

Fu’s greatest obligation and responsibility is to be a great husband and a super Dad. From all I can tell, he’s 5-star plus in those categories. Knowing many Okies, he represents them quite well.

This just hasn’t worked out, and at the end of the day, sadly, this isn’t about emotions (liking him, hard on families, ripping up lives) it really boils down to business - the overall work product.

This football team “must” generate the cash to fund all the other sports, the overall athletic department, save Men’s basketball. That’s just a fact. Whit full well knows that if “x” number of season tickets don’t renew or overall attendance drops to “y” what that costs.

It is my opinion we are in that zone with Fu - the loss of revenue > cost of Fu and staff. That’s unfortunate. No one wanted this to happen and as I’ve said before, leaving Doak Campbell Stadium after beating them in his 3rd season, I was convinced he was our guy. It just didn’t work out.

Regardless of the on field product no one is entitled to personally attack this man or his family. That’s bush league stuff - what did his family have to do with it? Posters and people engaging in this should be more than ashamed. He tried, he did what he thought would work and it just didn’t turn out to plan.

He will leave VT with over $30 million in total compensation, so keeping the family stuff strictly off limits, he was well paid for his time in Blacksburg. Firing someone is no picnic - a disdain I have trouble explaining. He will not be in the soup line. Christmas will go on at the Fu house, just maybe not in Burnt Orange and Chicago Maroon.

But, for many a new start and a new environment reflecting on what went wrong can lead to better outcomes. I trust he will find another gig in time and I wish him well. I wish he and his family success and happiness.

This just hadn’t worked out and hasn’t been for some time. Both parties need a new start. Best of luck Justin Fuente- I mean that.
