Yeah I would think the transition short term is like you said


People who can afford them and whose lifestyle allows for an EV can make the switch. Gas and diesel vehicles will be used when there is no viable alternative, and will will never really go away but will become more of a boutique or hobbyist/enthusiast item. In the long term (50-75 years ahead) I expect a shift to hub and spoke style transportation utilizing much of our current infrastructure.
