I do think it may have been accidental or an unintended consequence

of trying to provide the readers with as much detail as possible about the neighborhood. Newspapers have a balancing act between providing just enough information vs. providing too much information. For me, I would consider the sentence about how much a recent house in the neighborhood sold for in the "tad over the top" or "too much information" category because it was unnecessary for this particular story.
