1984 UVA came to Blacksburg and beat Virginia Tech on a 4rth down pass as the game was near an end. I was in high school at the time but at the game. The year before Tech embarrassed them 48 to 0 in Charlottesville and the Tech fans tore down their goalposts and paraded them in downtown C-ville. After final whistle blew, a bunch of UVA students rushed Tech's field but they made an error and headed for the goalposts closest to the Corp of Cadets. Before they could get there the corps had piled out and UVA fans realized it was not happening. So instead they turn and run towards the opposite goal posts where the Tech Cheerleaders had surrounded. The Tech students, upon realizing what was going to happen, began making their way onto the field. The cheerleaders did the best they could to block the on rush of UVA students but some got through, but like the Alamo they provided precious time for the Tech students to arrive. I remember one UVA student got almost up to the crossbar when a gigantic hand reached up pulled him down and punched him in the face. Then the Malay in the endzone became a free for all fist fight until the State Troppers got there. The UVA students tired of getting their ass's beat in typical UVA fashion meandered toward the 50 yards and line up like the Rocketts and started doing high kicks in unison as their pep band played. It was bad day to lose to UVA but they have never gotten our goalposts.
