For as much as people fret about modernity, we're very fortunate that


the last time something like that happened was 80 years ago. I don't mean to diminish 9/11, but it didn't send us into a world war like Pearl Harbor did. Things aren't perfect, but in an 85 year stretch, we had a civil war and two world wars, the three deadliest conflicts in US history. The 80 years since have been much better. It's also been 45 years since Vietnam.
