I get player safety, but the whole slide thing is ridiculous. I understand targeting before putting the slide rule in. This goes beyond safety, it basically says if you start running and decide you don't want to get "tackled" you can slide. So, as far as stopping the play on a fake slide ... a previous poster compared it to a "subtle" far catch signal and then running. Refs have to make a judgment if a fair catch signal started and blow the play dead ..... same with a slide. Simple.
