by "recruit your own backyard". VT needs to be familiar with ALL state schools but, the only thing dumber than turning your back on the state is signing a kid that has little to no chance to be able to play at that level. That will get you fired just as quick.

VT missed on a few evals like Basham and Redd, maybe even Kendrick's son. However, the plain and simple truth of the matter is that the quality and depth in this part of the state now is light years worse than the 60s through the 90s for a variety of reasons. You have the occasional guys like David Wilson, the Edmunds brothers, Logan Thomas and a few others but, the days of the Fitzgeralds, Browns, Volley, Hamilton, Dovel, Curry, Lewis and on and on and on are long gone. You could take the guys just from Danville and Lynchburg during those times and probably outstrip the entire SWVA area in the last ten years by a significant margin.
